Springtime Touring : Meribel & Les Trois Vallees
10-11 Apr 2021 (Sat-Sat) £TDB
Coaching on this course will be provided by Marmalade Ski School, our Alpine partner in Les Trois Vallees by Del Chandler, one of our associate coaches with extensive local knowledge of the Three Valleys ski domain. Our aim is to find some fun and easy off piste routes that are lift assisted and accessible with short uphill ski tours typically under an hour in length. We will introduce you to the basics of ski touring showing you how to use the specialised skis & bindings, applying skins and the use of avalanche safety equipment. If you have done a bit of touring we will show you some more advanced touring skills like kick turns and crampon usage to develop your touring capability.

The course will include on piste skiing to get you familiar with all the gear so we can enjoy the peace and tranquility that easy ski tours can provide. Springtime conditions should allow for skinning each day but if we have adverse weather we will work with you to improve your off piste skillset through drills and exercises on piste. Touring in wintertime can be tough and sometimes makes you feel like a rubbish skier… Skiing in spring makes you feel like a hero!

If you have touring skis and boots great, if not we can arrange for hire at a local shop. Backpacks with avalanche rescue equipment will be required every day. If you have your own please bring it along, if not we will issue you with all the relevant equipment (backpack, shovel, probe and transceiver) free of charge.

This holiday is suitable for level 8 and higher skiers who relate as off-piste Improvers or off-piste Developers who are keen to learn or develop their ski touring skills.

A scenic town popular with the British, Meribel offers a vast range of skiing for all levels. As it is well linked with its sister resorts of Courchevel and Val Thorens you will be able to ski new runs every day during your holiday, and never be bored with the endless terrain available.

Coaching
The coaching will comprise 4 full-day and one half day coaching sessions during the course with a day off. This is a typical schedule and is highly dependent on weather and snow conditions and we may need to rearrange as the week progresses.

This week is to get away from the crowds and will have several short tours, if you are less keen on the up and more the down please consider our Off Piste Fundamentals or Off Piste Development holidays.

This holiday is suitable for level 8 and higher skiers who confidently enjoy skiing off piste on steeper slopes (red+) away from pistes and relate as off-piste Improvers or off-piste Developers. Will have several weeks spent skiing off piste terrain and some knowledge of mountain craft. Possibly skied with guides and may have ski toured. Skis confidently and enjoys powder, able to ski with consistent speed and turn shape in all but the most challenging conditions. Able to handle a variety of conditions including lightly crusted and wind affected snow. Has the fitness to ski off piste all day and would be happy to skin uphill on easy gradients for up to an hour at a time and can get up unassisted after a fall in deep snow.

Coaching will be provided by Derek Chandler who is the founder of SkiMarmalade and has over 20 seasons of skiing in Les Trois Vallees and knows the area extremely well. Video review will be minimal as we will be focussing on getting mileage in but we will endeavour to obtain some footage and photographs of you skiing over the course of the week.
